Rankin Federal Release Scope
The BOP Inmate Locator covers federal prisoners from 1982 to the present and can return records for people who have left BOP custody. It is nationwide. A result does not become a Rankin County detention record merely because the person was arrested, prosecuted, supervised, or later lived in the county. No BOP prison was found in Rankin County in this research.
The locator can show a release date and language such as “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody.” BOP explains that such language means the person is no longer in BOP custody. It does not exclude custody in a county jail, a state corrections system, or ICE. It also does not erase federal supervised release ordered by the court. Use the result as one system’s status, with its query date preserved.
Search Federal Release Records
A federal register number is the strongest locator key when it is known. BOP also permits searches using DCDC, FBI, or INS numbers. A biographical search uses the name and filters such as age, race, and sex. Compare every available identifier before selecting a common name. The returned register number should be saved for later records or court work.
- Open the official BOP locator and choose the identifier or name search.
- Use the federal number when available, including the correct number type.
- For a name search, compare age, race, sex, and spelling variants.
- Open or preserve the matching record’s register number, status, date, and location text.
- Check the federal docket and any receiving system before describing community release.
A release date is stronger than an inference from absence, but it still states the BOP event. If the person was a federal pretrial detainee under U.S. Marshals Service responsibility, a final BOP record may not yet exist. If the status suggests another custodian, follow that agency rather than asking BOP to certify events outside its control.
Federal Locator Result Fields
Read the entire federal result. One field without its system label can mislead. The locator may return the register number, age, race, sex, release date, and location or custody wording. BOP statistics also treat transfers to another jurisdiction, a state sentence, or ICE differently from ordinary releases. That supports a careful reading of “released” as a BOP status, not a universal legal conclusion.
| Federal field | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Register number | Match the person and use the number in later federal inquiries |
| Age, race, sex | Distinguish people with the same or similar names |
| Release date | Record the BOP-reported custody end date |
| Location or status | Determine whether a facility is shown or BOP says custody ended |
| Query date | Preserve when the dynamic locator was checked |
Do not call a future date an actual release. Do not infer the release reason from the date alone. The federal judgment can show the sentence and supervised-release term, while BOP owns the federal prison record. A receiving jail or agency owns the next intake if a transfer occurred.
Note: The BOP locator reports federal custody status and cannot certify a later Rankin, MDOC, or immigration event.
Federal System Contact Route
The Federal Inmate Locator represents a federal search system rather than a physical Rankin County facility. There is therefore no local BOP address or telephone to invent. Use the official locator for a sentenced federal prisoner and the relevant federal court or U.S. Marshals Service district route for a pretrial or transport question.
Federal custody lookup
BOP sentenced-prisoner search: bop.gov/inmateloc
Pretrial or transport stage: federal court and appropriate USMS district contact
Immigration custody: ICE Online Detainee Locator System
Rankin county custody: Rankin County Sheriff
The U.S. Marshals Service prisoner information explains its remand and transport role, but USMS does not provide the same historic public released-person locator as BOP. Use the federal docket, counsel or clerk, and district contact as appropriate. After BOP designation, the BOP locator becomes the main public prison route.
Rankin Federal Custody Boundaries
Rankin County’s local roster belongs to the Sheriff, and the MDOC search belongs to Mississippi state corrections. Neither replaces BOP. A person with a federal case can be held before designation in a facility used by USMS, then enter BOP later. Conversely, a former BOP prisoner can enter state or county custody after the federal release date. Search the system that owns each stage.
- BOP custody
- Federal prison custody of a designated sentenced person within the Bureau of Prisons system.
- USMS custody
- Federal remand, transport, and detention responsibility that may precede BOP designation.
- Supervised release
- A federal court-ordered community term after incarceration, distinct from BOP custody.
- Detainer
- A request or hold that may lead to delivery to another authority.
- Transfer
- Movement to another custodian, which is not the same as community release.
The Rankin County release-search overview distinguishes county, state, federal, and immigration routes. Use no more than the relevant paths. A federal result should not be forced into a county jail narrative, and an ordinary Rankin bond-out should not be expected in BOP.
Federal Supervised Release Proof
Federal supervised release is imposed by the federal court and follows imprisonment when the judgment requires it. It is not parole, and it is not shown fully by the BOP locator. A BOP release date can mark the end of BOP confinement while federal court supervision begins. Read the judgment and later docket orders for the term and any changes.
The federal docket can also show whether a sentence was amended, whether a violation proceeding occurred, and which court retains jurisdiction. A location in Rankin County does not transfer federal supervision to the Rankin MDOC office. Federal probation and state Community Corrections are separate systems. Contact the federal court or the proper federal supervision office through official channels.
A violation or warrant entry needs the dated federal source. It should not be inferred from a BOP status change. Likewise, completion of BOP custody does not prove completion of supervised release. When the question is final federal discharge from supervision, seek the court or federal supervision record that establishes it.
ICE After Federal Custody
An ICE transfer is not release to the community. The ICE Online Detainee Locator System accepts a nine-digit A-number with country of birth, or biographical fields using exact first and last name, country, and optional date of birth. It does not publish records for people under eighteen. A current no-result has several possible meanings and cannot establish release or removal by itself.
ICE’s official resources state that ODLS can include current detainees and people released from ICE custody within the prior 60 days. After that window, absence cannot disprove an older immigration custody event. Preserve the returned status and query date. If the destination or legal event matters, use the official ICE contact route and the immigration case record.
A person moving from BOP to ICE may be excluded from ordinary BOP release counts as a transfer. Read both systems in order. BOP answers when federal prison custody ended, while ICE answers its own detention stage. Neither should be used to claim the other agency’s final action.
Note: ODLS has a limited recent-release window, so an older absence is not proof that ICE never held or released the person.
Rankin Federal Evidence Chain
Build the federal evidence chain from the register number, BOP result, federal judgment, and any receiving-system record. Save the BOP status and date as displayed. Obtain the court judgment for the sentence and supervised-release term. If the person moved to another authority, match the BOP end event with that authority’s intake. This prevents “not in BOP custody” from becoming an unsupported claim of unrestricted release.
For a Rankin County connection, add local records only when a local event actually occurred. The Sheriff’s jail docket can document county admission or release. MDOC can document a state sentence or supervision location. Neither local record should be assumed from residence or court venue alone. No verified source in the research identifies a BOP institution or a current ICE-dedicated contract facility in Rankin County.
Dynamic searches change, so note the time and keep a copy of the returned fields when the record matters. If identity is uncertain, stop until the number and biographical fields align. The most accurate conclusion names the system: released from BOP custody, transferred to another authority, subject to federal supervised release, or no matching public BOP record found.
