CMCF Release Status Paths
Central Mississippi Correctional Facility is an MDOC state prison, not the Rankin County jail. It houses sentenced people and serves as a reception and classification point for many commitments from central Mississippi circuit courts. A person can enter CMCF after leaving a county jail, remain there, or be assigned to another state institution. That first movement is state intake, not release.
An actual departure from confinement may be parole, earned-release supervision, or maximum discharge. Parole is conditional release approved through the Mississippi State Parole Board. Earned-release supervision, often called ERS, places an eligible person in the community for part of the term while MDOC jurisdiction continues. Maximum discharge is the stronger end-of-sentence event. A move to another prison, unit, or program is only a transfer.
Check a CMCF Release
Begin with the MDOC inmate search. An MDOC number is the best search key. When only a name is known, compare date of birth, physical identifiers, county of conviction, sentence facts, and the photograph before selecting a record. The location field often answers more than the date. CMCF or another prison unit points to confinement, while a community-corrections location can point to release from a cell under continued supervision.
Follow a focused sequence:
- Search by MDOC number or a carefully matched name.
- Save the location, unit, change date, sentence, and tentative date together.
- Decide whether the new location is another institution or Community Corrections.
- Request custody history, time computation, release type, and discharge certificate.
- For parole, obtain the Board decision and verify the supervising office.
The Rankin County release-record overview helps when a CMCF admission began as a transfer from the county jail.
Read a CMCF Reception Record
Because CMCF receives and classifies many central-region commitments, its public detail must be read as a sequence rather than a single release field. The MDOC ID, entry date, county of conviction, sentence date, and offense help confirm why the person entered state custody. Location and unit then show whether classification kept the person at CMCF or placed that person elsewhere. The photograph and physical traits help prevent a same-name error.
| CMCF field | Reception or release meaning |
|---|---|
| Entry date | Marks entry into the state record, not community release. |
| Location and unit | Identifies the current institution, unit, or community assignment. |
| Location-change date | Dates a reassignment, which may be transfer or supervision. |
| County, offense, sentence | Connects the reception record to the controlling judgment. |
| Tentative Release Date | Provides an anticipated date, not a completed event. |
For CMCF, a new prison location supports classification or transfer. A Community Corrections location needs parole or ERS confirmation. Final discharge requires the formal MDOC record, not an inference from the reception detail.
CMCF Records and Contact
The facility contact can route operational questions, but documentary status requests belong through MDOC’s written public-record channel. MDOC says it does not accept telephone requests for inmate or public records. A narrow request should identify the person and ask for the offender data sheet, custody and location history, time-computation sheet, actual release or discharge date and type, parole or ERS dates, discharge certificate, and available institutional photograph.

CMCF Dates Are Tentative
MDOC uses the label Tentative Release Date. Its handbook describes that as an anticipated date after adjustments for earned time or credit for time served. Inputs can include the sentence start and length, concurrent or consecutive terms, eligible presentence jail credit, offense, sentencing date, earned-time credit, forfeitures, parole action, ERS eligibility, and later court orders. A single county jail intake date cannot reproduce that calculation.
Miss. Code Ann. § 47-5-138 includes a traditional earned-time allowance of 4.5 days per 30 days served for qualifying post-1995 sentences, capped at 15 percent, subject to exclusions. Release under that provision can lead to ERS for the remaining term. The familiar 85-percent phrase is not a universal promise. Request the MDOC timesheet for a person-specific answer.
- Tentative release
- The current anticipated date, subject to change.
- ERS
- Community placement under MDOC jurisdiction for an eligible part of the term.
- Parole
- Conditional release decided by the Parole Board.
- Discharge
- The formal end of the sentence or jurisdiction shown by agency records.
CMCF Release Planning
MDOC’s Family and Friends FAQ says release processing may take 30 to 45 days and that a person must receive a discharge certificate before release. The case manager verifies travel plans. MDOC may buy a bus ticket to a destination or nearest city when requested, but the FAQ excludes out-of-state travel from that aid. These are state-prison procedures, not Rankin County jail rules.
The same official material warns that expected parole or ERS dates are not guaranteed. The Parole Board controls parole decisions, while MDOC Records reviews ERS eligibility and institution data. Court orders, detainers, lost credits, or incomplete release planning can change the outcome. A family plan should rely on the assigned case manager and final release papers, not just the public date.
Note: The public tentative date is a planning clue; the discharge certificate and final MDOC record establish what occurred.
CMCF Within Rankin Custody
Rankin County places three stages of a custody path close together: the Adult Detention Center in Brandon, CMCF in Pearl, and the Rankin Community Corrections office. A person can leave the county roster and reach CMCF without leaving the county. Later, the same person may enter community supervision through an office nearby. Physical location in Rankin County does not tell whether the person is jailed, imprisoned, or living in the community under conditions.
Use the records in sequence. The sheriff’s penitentiary receipt confirms delivery from county custody. MDOC location history confirms reception, classification, and later placement. A Board grant or ERS record explains conditional release. The Community Corrections assignment identifies supervision. A discharge certificate answers whether MDOC jurisdiction ended. This custody ladder prevents transfer from being mislabeled as release.
About Central Mississippi Correctional
MDOC says CMCF opened in 1986 and expanded in 1996. The Pearl site covers 171 acres and includes 18 confinement units and 10 support buildings. It serves as the first stop for many people sentenced from central-region circuit courts. Classification can keep a person at CMCF or send that person to another MDOC facility.
CMCF also contains MDOC’s youthful-offender unit, while the Mississippi Correctional Institute for Women is separately designated on the grounds. Identify the exact institution or unit and date range instead of asking broadly for a Rankin County inmate file.
Verify CMCF Facility Context
The official MDOC CMCF profile is the primary source for the Pearl prison’s reception and classification role, campus facts, and contact information. Check that profile when a location label must be distinguished from release to community supervision.
The profile establishes what CMCF is, while the named person’s offender detail and custody history establish where that individual went. Use both before treating a move from CMCF as parole, ERS, discharge, or a transfer to another state institution.
